The 24-hour messaging window is one of the most important rules to understand when you automate Instagram replies. It sets when a business can message someone after they write to it. This guide explains what opens the window, how it differs from a private reply to a comment, and how comment-to-DM campaigns are designed around both.

What is the Instagram 24-hour messaging window?
The standard 24-hour messaging window opens when a person sends you a message, including a reply to your Story or to a message you sent. During that window a business can reply. A comment alone works differently: it allows one private reply, but it does not open the standard messaging window.
Why does comment-to-DM fit inside the window?
Because the first message is a private reply to the comment, which Meta allows once per comment within 7 days — or only during the broadcast for Live comments. Further messages need a response from the person and must fit in the messaging window that response opens. Sending, even when automatic, can still be delayed or fail.
What happens after the person replies?
Anything beyond the first reply needs a little more care. If the person writes back, a 24-hour window opens from their message: you can answer them personally, and automated follow-ups can go out within it. CommentTap checks the window again before each automated message and skips it if the window has closed.
What opens the window?
The window opens when the person does something in the conversation: sends you a direct message, replies to a message or a story, reacts to a message, or taps a reply button you sent (a tap on a link that opens a website doesn’t count). Meta’s documentation says that for most user actions the standard messaging window lasts 24 hours; when someone sends their first message after clicking a Click-to-Direct ad, it can last up to 7 days. Each new message from the person starts a new window from that moment. These are Meta’s platform rules, not CommentTap features — CommentTap doesn’t run campaigns from ads. A comment on its own works differently: it allows one private reply instead of opening a full conversation, which is why comment-to-DM campaigns are designed to get a reply or a tap in the very first message.
How is a private reply different from the 24-hour window?
A private reply is a single direct message sent in answer to a comment. Meta allows one per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, and further messages only after the person responds — at which point the regular 24-hour window applies. So a comment-to-DM flow has two phases. Phase one is the private reply: one message, no follow-ups. Phase two starts when the person writes back or taps a button: now there is a 24-hour window in which you can deliver the guide, confirm the email or send a reminder. Designing for both phases means the first message has to stand on its own and give the person a reason to answer.
Can a business message someone outside the window?
Only in narrow cases. Meta provides a Human Agent tag that lets a business reply manually within a separate 7-day period, for situations where a person’s issue could not be solved inside the standard window. It is meant for real human support, not for promotions or automated sequences, and using tags outside approved use cases can get messaging restricted. For marketing, the rule is simple: if the person has not interacted in the last 24 hours, wait for them to interact again — by commenting on a new post, replying to a story or sending a keyword. A steady flow of content with clear calls to action keeps reopening the window naturally. Every comment on a fresh post is another chance for a private reply, and every story reply opens a full conversation window in which you can deliver what the person asked for.
How does CommentTap time follow-ups inside the window?
Follow-ups in CommentTap are conditional and timed from the event that triggers them: for example after an email is captured, or after someone clicked the link but did not leave an email. You choose a delay of 1, 3, 6, 12 or 23 hours from the triggering event. The delay doesn’t extend the messaging window. When a follow-up is due, CommentTap checks again before sending: if the window since the person’s last message has closed, if they opted out, or if you have already replied to them yourself, the follow-up is skipped.
